In 1983 she was the first African woman crowned Miss America but she lost her title in the scandal that followed. As an entertainer she gained Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award nominations. She is known for support of gay rights and she has also won the "Ally for Equality" award in 2008 in Human Rights Campaign.
